One of the most important tasks of any government is to provide for the safety and security of its citizens. I believe in a well-resourced and visible police service - one that is close to the community it serves, with Gardaí on the beat in neighbourhoods as much as possible. This can have a hugely positive impact on people's quality of life, and on the rates of crime. I also believe that we need to see drug abuse and alcohol consumption, especially by young people, as a health and education issue as much as a law enforcement problem. But we must also deal firmly and decisively with drug gangs and drug trafficking in our cities and towns.
