White Commends “Extraordinary” Response of First-time Voters in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown

Minister Alex White, Labour TD for Dublin South, commended the response of newly registered voters to the forthcoming referenda.

Speaking on the announcement that 5,308 new voters had registered to the supplementary electoral register in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Minister White said: “The response of people in our area to register in such large numbers to vote for the first time this Friday has been extraordinary.”

“It is really heartening to see such a high level of engagement with, and enthusiasm for, the electoral process.  It is so important that we, as citizens, exercise our democratic right to vote and shape the country we live in.

“In my role as Labour Party Director of Elections for the Marriage Equality referendum, I have been canvassing not only in Dublin South, but across the country over the past few weeks, and have been struck by the tremendous interest and participation I have encountered every step of the way.

“It is, of course, critical that along with registering to vote, people actually get to the polling station.  Polls are open on Friday from 7am to 10pm and it is important to plan ahead and co-ordinate how and when you’ll get to the polling station, along with helping out any friends or relatives who may have difficulty getting to the polls.”
